Three ideas stand out in the investment landscape: 1) Peak conventional oil production is still real, with the higher price deck and technological advancements [changing the game](http://media.pimco.com/Documents/PER033-022312%20US_Game%20Changer%20GBL.pdf). 2) The industrialization of China and the emerging markets growth with their [raw materials consumption](http://www.usfunds.com/media/files/pdfs/researchreports/2011-research-pdfs/11-226_S-curves_Schwab_revised.pdf?CFID=317255&CFTOKEN=60789334) and attendant disruption. 3) The credit bubble and the money printing saga [continuing](http://kingworldnews.com/kingworldnews/KWN_DailyWeb/Entries/2012/4/20_Hathaway_-_Fed_to_Print_More_Money_%26_Gold_to_Hit_New_Highs.html).

As we navigate trying to understand the investment world, this blog tries to wade through the sludge to improve our understanding. I post anonymously. In the spirit of pioneering financial writers from Larry Livingstone to today’s blogosphere, I use the my pen name **J.J. Butler**. Eighty years ago (pre-SEC!) a real J.J. Butler wrote the booklet *[Successful Stock Speculation](http://www.gutenberg.org/files/26841/26841-h/26841-h.htm)* for his brokerage firm. Enjoy!

Meanwhile, Michael Steinhardt: “You can’t avoid being specific, you can’t avoid picking something. Asset classes are not a way to get rich.” Investment commentary on the market direction and asset classes seems ubiquitous to the exclusion of individual security insight. Thus the *Independent Stock Analysis* has been born.
